The Claremont area was first settled in the mid 1800’s as predominantly
a dairy farming area. By the turn of the century, retail buildings had
been constructed on Bay View Terrace.
The area’s first official recognition as a centre of style for Perth
was when Lieutenant Colonel Sir Gerard Smith set his seal of approval
on the suburb when he opened the Claremont Wildflower Show in 1898.
By 1915, the area presented as an active retail precinct which was the foundation of Claremont as we know it today.
